  1.     Thanks for the post.  However, the problem magically  
  2. disappeared.  I was hoping it was a glitch, because I had always  
  3. thought that background images were kind of "sacred", and were  
  4. always supposed to look right.  Of course, a couple hundred lens  
  5. flares might change the appearance of a bkg image.  However, in my  
  6. case, there weren't any objects anywhere close to where the dark  
  7. banding was occurring.
